Article from Outside below - such a tragic end to an incredible life. Rest in peace, Dave... A reminder for all of us to keep a close watch on our loved ones. Depression is a real thing, a chemical imbalance in the brain that can make a person act in a way they never would otherwise. Continued thoughts and prayers for his wife and kids...

My guess is that he was seriously depressed that he would never be competitive to the point where he had a good chance of being winning-competitive again. And he probably (incorrectly) believed that without that, he was worthless/hopeless.

Very sad.

Thats such a tragic story. I’m not a huge extreme sports guy or anything, but it broke my heart when I heard Dave died.

Whats worse is, reading the story, you start to see the warning signs in his behavior, according to some of his friends. And it sounds like they did the best they could, trying to all him and check on him regularly. But at that point, what else can you do? It’s scary.

Thanks for sharing.. A very sad story, see far too often that retired athletes struggle to find something else that can give meaning to their life.

Thanks. My wife’s baby brother took his own life several years ago. We miss him. A lot.

I’m very sorry for your loss; I can’t imagine how hard that’s been on her. We’ve nearly lost my mom to depression in the past, but thankfully she’s made it through and seems to be okay, even though she has tough times here and there.
